Brief intro to Mac OS X and Tutorial

Today, I am going to teach you how to make an account on Mac OS X. But first, you should know a few things. Mac OS X is made by Apple Inc, it is a operating system software for computers. It is run on computer only made by Apple. So Macbooks, iMacs, Mac Pros, and Mac Minis run this software. Mac OS X is a very advanced piece of software, it is similar to Windows, but in my opinion Mac OS X is better than Windows. It is very easy to use, simplistic in fact. If you're a Windows user and you switch to a Mac computer, you will never want to go back to Windows again. Guaranteed. In my previous tutorials of iOS, I might have mentioned that iOS is Mac OS X in a smaller form. Mac OS X currently comes with alot of neat stuff. YOu can use iPhoto to organize and edit pictures, iMovie to edit pictures, iTunes to listen to your favorite music, and you can use the iLife suite to do alot of neat things as well.

Note: Due to internet connection, I was unable to upload pictures for this tutorial, so I am sorry for the inconvenience.

But at any rate. We are going to start the tutorial. We are going to create an account, which is very simple to do.  We are doing this tutorial on my Choir teachers computer today.

We are doing to start from the desktop. On a Mac, the desktop looks similar to a Windows computer. But there are a few minor differences. There is something called a Dock, which is located on the right side of this machine. There is also a taskbar located on the top of the computer, instead of the bottom, different from a Windows computer.

Anyway. So we are at the desktop. In the far left hand corner of the screen, click on the Apple logo, and then go down and click on System Preferences.

In System Preferences, find Accounts and click on that account. When you click that, a prompt for Accounts will appear. You can add accounts, delete them, change the passwords, change profile pictures, edit Parental Controls, and other things. We are going to add an account. Near the bottom of the Accounts windows, there will be a "+" symbol. Click that and a prompt for adding an account will appear. From there enter your username, password, and password hint. When you have finished entering that information, click Create Account.

Congrats! You've created your own account for your Mac computer! Wasn't that easy? Next week, we will have another tutorial on Mac OS X. We will get more into user accounts and system preferences. I will also briefly show you the programs Mac OS X has to offer, they are really neat programs! But until next weeks blog post, see you later. Instinct out.

Steve Jobs Death and Tutorial

As some of you are aware, Steve Jobs passed away on October 5th. Steve was co-creator of Apple, Pixar, and creator of NeXT. He has changed how we do everything in our daily lives. He invented the iPod, the personal computer, the iPad, the iPhone, computer animated movies, and so much more. Steve can easily be compared to someone like Thomas Edison or Henry Ford. He was an incredible visionary, and a great mind. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew what he did and for getting things done. He was a great inspiration to me, and will be a huge impact in my life as I move on. Steve, we will miss you.

“I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.” -Steve Jobs

So, in a previous tutorial, I guided you on how to add an e-mail account on an iOS device. Well today, you are going to learn how to create an e-mail account. We are going to create a G-Mail account. Lets get started.

So, we are going to start on the desktop. We are going to open a new internet page, I use Google Chrome, but you may use anything else. By the way, this awesome desktop background is from Digital Blasphemy. This guy makes really amazing backgrounds for computers and mobile devices. Go check them out! :)

On your webpage, go to this link: Google and if your page shows up like on the picture above, click on sign in on the grey bar on the top right of the webpage. You will be redirected to the page below:

So if you did this correctly, you should see a page that looks like this with a sign in option and a few things a Google Account will offer you and all that jazzy stuff. Above the sign in box, there is a link that says "Sign up for a new Google Account. Click that link and it will redirect you to a sign up page that looks like this:

So if this page comes up, you can move on to the next step, which is signing up. Review this page and fill out the form with your current email address, passwords, location, your birthday date and so forth. Do the Word Verification and read the terms below then accept the terms.

Congrats! You have now created a Google Account. You can now access Google Docs, subscribe to YouTube Videos, check your email, and make a Google+ profile. You can do alot more things now that you have a Google Account, and you will also find having an email or Google+ profile is a great way to communicate with people. For more tutorials on technology or advice, please subscribe to this page and check back every week for a new tutorial. But until next weeks tech tutorial, Instinct out. Have a good day.

Announcement and Brief Tutorial

Before I get into the tutorial today, last week I made a tutorial using iOS. On October 14th, the iPhone 4S will be released, along with iOS 5, the latest version of iOS. Also software on the iPod Nano has been updated and the iPod Touch comes in white now, along with black.

Today, Apple announced their new iPhone, which has some pretty great new features. One of them, it a new 8MP (Mega Pixel) Camera built in to the phone. The camera is also capable of shooting 1080p HD video, which is a really great feature. Another feature is Siri Voice Control. It is a new addition to the software, which is running in beta (Testing Stages). It will allow you to control any part of your iOS device. The last new addition to the iPhone 4S, is the Apple's new A5 processor is built right in. 7X better graphics, dual core graphics, and 2X faster than the previous iPhone. Another new thing. Sprint is now a major carrier of the iPhone starting next. The new iPhone is a world wide phone now, meaning it should be compatible with most networks around the globe.

You can read additional details here: Engadget

Okay, so today really isn't much of a tutorial, it is more of a guide. I will be showing you what some ports on the back of a computer are, or on the computer. I will show you a few pictures of ports on the computer, and what they can be used for and why they are useful.

So, above shows 13 unique ports (15 total) on the back of a computer. I am going to go from 1-13 on what these ports do. So here we go.

1: Your first port, the purple six pin port, is for your keyboard, your keyboard can be used for many things obviously, :P. But. it can be used for things over than typing.

2: This port is for your mouse, the object you use to move the mouse on the screen with, or the arrow perhaps.

3: That port is your Ethernet port. This is how you get internet through a wire or ethernet cable.

4: Those two identical ports are USB port. You can stick thumb drives in here, mouses, keyboards, or anything else with a USB port on it.

5: These are serial ports, they are used for connecting modems, etc, but these ports aren't used often anymore.

6: This port is called a parallel port. But in simple terms, you can connect a printer to this port to print posters, papers, card, etc.

7: This is a game pad port, not alot of systems have these anymore though, mainly older systems, but these can be used to connect old joysticks or gamepads, etc.

8: This is your audio out port. This is were you connect speakers into your system to get sound outputted.

9: This is your line in port, this is were you connect headphones.

10: This is a microphone port, it can be used to connect a microphone and record whatever you so choose!

11. This is an S-Video Port, these port can be used to connect to TVs, along with number 12 is this possible.

12. This is a TV Out cable, allowing you to connect to a TV.

13. This is a VGA port. These are common port on TVs, and monitors to get a output on your screen.

That was a visual layout of ports. For more tutorials, visual aids, or guides, please subscribe. Instinct out. :)

Intro to iOS and Mail Tutorial

Before we get into a tutorial today, I am going to give you an introduction to iOS. iOS is the software built to run on iPod Touches, iPhones, and iPads. It is one of the most advance operating systems in the world. It was made by Apple. iOS has been said to be basically a simple build of Mac OS X. There are many similarities to both softwares. But alot of the features iOS has, they are also being implimented into Mac OS X. iOS devices are one of the worlds most advanced pieces of technology, the iPhone revolutionized the way we interact with people and the internet. There are many essential programs on iOS. You can listen to music, download apps, read books, browse the internet and your email, read the weather or stocks, and on some devices, you can take pictures. It is very remarkable some of the things Apple has made to improve technology.

Alright, you now have a brief intro to iOS. For this weeks tutorial, I will be teaching you how to set up a mail account on iOS. It is fairly simple to complete.

So first off we are going to start at the Home Screen. The Home Screen is where all of your apps are located, you may also search your iPod using Spotlight from the Home Screen, and also looking at your Notifications Center. This is the Home Screen on my iPod Touch. Awesome huh? :P

From the Home Screen, you are going to tap on the Settings icon, as you can see in the picture of the Home Screen. Once you are in your Setting app, scroll down with your finger until you see a menu that says "Mail, Contacts, and Calenders".

Once you tap that, you will see an option to "Add account...". Tap that and you will be directed to a list of Mail providers to choose from.

Tap on an e-mail provider that you use currently, in this tutorial I have chosen Hotmail, but you may choose something other than my choice. There are quite a few choices to choose from, I personally like iCloud and Gmail, but I chose Hotmail to set up in this tutorial. When you tap on your email provider, a menu like this will pop up:

When this comes up, enter your email credentials and when you are done, tap the next button.

The menu above will show up next. Set up these settings how you choose. You can decide what information from your email will be sent to your iOS device, such as your mail, contacts, calenders, and events that you need to be reminded to complete.

And You're done! Congrats! You have successfully set up an email account on your iOS device! I hope that you have found this tutorial to be helpful, and simple to follow through. Please subscribe to my blog for more tutorials and other interesting things to be posted in the future. But, until next weeks post, Instinct out.

Setting Up a Wireless Connection

Okay, so first this week, I am going to teach you a few basic things to help you set up your computer. In this tutorial, I will be using Windows 7. In this tutorial, you will learn how to set up a wireless network. There are pictures along with text to help you through the process of setting up a wireless network in this tutorial. If you have any questions about this tutorial at the end, feel free to leave a comment on this post about anything regarding this post. Thank you.

The following steps will help you on setting up a network:

So first, we are going to start from the desktop.

From the desktop, you are going to click the start button, locates on the bottom left hand corner of your screen. (This screen is different, the button is located at the top left corner of the screen on the image above.

When you clicked the start button, the start menu came up. On the right hand side of the start menu, go down the list until you see the Control Panel. Once you see the control panel, click on that.

In the Control Panel, you will find many tools to change your systems settings. You will refer to the control panel often when making necessary changes to your computer. From here, find Network and Internet and click on that, it is right under System and Security.

You are now in Network and Internet. From here, you can join a network, make, edit, and join a HomeGroup, and access your Internet Options. Click on Network and Sharing Center.

From here, you can set up a new connection or network, connect to a network, Choose HomeGroup and sharing options, and troubleshoot problems. You can also change many other settings. You are going to click on "Set up a new connection or network".

This menu will pop up when you click on "Set up a new connection or network" in the Network and Sharing Center of the Control Panel. From here, you will want to click "Manually Connection to a Wireless Network".

This menu will pop up. You will enter the settings in the image as I have above. But your network settings are different than mine. You may need to ask your network advisor for the network name and security key, if you have not already obtained them.

This is what you will have if you go back to Network and Sharing Center. Under the text, View your basic network information and set up connections, there will be three images. Your computer, the network, and the internet will all be connected together in a chain. You are now connected to the internet! Congrats. :) Coming up next week will be a tutorial on how to install iTunes, and set up an iPod Touch with your computer. More details coming through out the week. I hope you found this tutorial to be helpful. and I hope you are having fun using the internet. :) Instinct out.

How This Blog Will Work

So basically, I will be looking at our technology based websites, f.a.q.s over technology, or submitted questions to answer about and do tutorials over. So say, I am asked a question about to install a program. I will then write out a list of instructions for the installer to read so that everything goes smoothly. Along with a list of detail instructions, I will also include screenshots of what the installation will look like when it is done correctly. Also, I will write down a list of scenarios that could happen if you mess up a step or leave one out. The Q&A will be very detailed and easy to understand for the average computer user. Also on some occasions, I will make a video tutorial explaining how to do things, along with text based directions. In the upcoming weeks, I will have external links to tech websites in case you are unable to find help on this blog.
I will be answering questions pertaining about Macs, PCs, iOS devices (iPods, iPads, iPhones, etc), hardware/software, and networking. This blog will be updated on a weekly basis, so stay tuned for further updates.

Signing out, Instinct.

Intro to Instinct

Hello. This is Instinct Tech Support, and our first post will explain a little about what and why we do what we do.

What questions will guide this inquiry?
  • The questions can vary from anything technology related really,  if you are having a problem with your computer or mobile device or accessories to them, you can submit a question on this tech blog and the publisher will respond by giving you a tutorial, which may either be a video tutorial or a picture guided tutorial with text for directions. This blog will get you the information you need, when you request it. You will find out more about how your questions will be received and answered in a short time.
What do you want to figure out or try to understand better?
  • Even though I have alot of experience with computers and such, there is more I might be able to learn about them and the technology lying within them. But there are alot of things I would like to understand better such as coding, networking, To figure those things out, I will read various sources such as books, magazines, websites, etc., to gain more experience with various computer infrastructures. With that knowledge, I will be able to answer questions from the readers with more detailed responses and tutorials.
Why do you want to know more about this?
  • Down the road, I plan on getting a career as a Computer Engineer. To do that, I need as much knowledge I can obtain to get a great job. I have been very smart with computers and whatnot since I was a child, I have always wanted a job envolving some kind of intellectual work. To get started in my career, I will be going to IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis) to study for my degrees in Computer Science and Informatics. From there, I will begin my job search in the computer field. I plan on majoring in both Computer Science and Informatics to get the most out of my career choice. I hope to work pretty high up at a well known tech company such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc. Just being a big asset in the computer industry is a pretty big dream of mine, being apart of the thing that constantly keeps everything running is a really big thing.
Why does it intrigue you?
  • As I said previously, I have been interested in computer related things since I was a child. My brothers are all highly intelligent with technology. My brother in law, Joe, he works for Symantec, a very well know company known for making anti virus programs. He, along with my other brothers, have taught me alot about technology. Anywho. Having them around me in my life has inspired me to choose to study more about this career and the aspects of it all. Alot of it intrigues me because all of it looking interesting to me, like tinkering around with a computer figuring out how it works and whatnot, troubleshooting an issue, you know; that's interesting to me.
